I Am Not Her(e)

I am not Her(e) is a series of figurative, self-portraiture watercolor paintings on a clay board

surface, which is a kind of play on the rich history of female artist self-portrait work. In this

work, I address the interrogation of gaze, subverting and refracting it in various ways.

Interpreting and approaching representation through a contemporary female lens, I am providing

subtle hints, through painted allegory about myself, the artist. Further enhancing the story by

utilizing painting techniques and formal decisions so that the viewer sees hints of bone, layers of

aging skin and a detailed look at fragmented body parts.

In this work, allegory and history seek to intertwine along the road of self-discovery and self-

awareness. A revival of introspective art with the self as the subject, can be both contemporary

and inspiring, as well as connected to the rich history from which it is derived.

*All work in this series was created 2021-22 and is Watercolor on Aquabord.
